Après 'Hollow Man', Jerry Goldsmith revient encore une fois dans le registre de la musique de thriller sur le nouveau film de Lee Tamahori, avec lequel le maestro avait déjà collaboré sur l’excellent 'The Edge' en 1997.
Le score de 'Along Came a Spider' est intéressant à bien des égards, Certains pourront y apprécier l'ambiance, le son, l'esprit si particulier qui se dégage de cette musique plus sombre que jamais dans laquelle on retrouve toutes les trouvailles et astuces sonores du compositeur de cette période.
Ici pas de grand thème fédérateur, pas de lyrisme poignant mais une atmosphère tendue, lourde, soulignant parfaitement l'ambiguïté des personnages et l'action omniprésente . Même le silence est de la partie surtout lorsque Jerry Goldsmith introduit les rythmiques synthétiques en echoplex.
Un score qui nous rappelle à certains moments celui qu'avait conçu Goldsmith pour "The don is dead" avec ces effets "grillon" électroniques uniques et si modernes pour l'époque.
On pourra ainsi apprécier dans ‘Along Came a Spider’ de nouveaux grands morceaux d'action, avec en particulier 'The Ransom', illustrant la scène où Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman), le détective profiler du film, doit se rendre dans le métro pour remettre la rançon au tueur. Percussions, cordes frénétiques, cuivres développant un thème omniprésent tout au long de la scène, tempo haletant et changements rythmiques constants, 'The Ransom' exprime clairement l'excitation et le suspense de cette dangereuse remise de rançon tout en maintenant une tension omniprésente pendant plus de 7 minutes, un morceau intense et absolument incontournable de la partition de ‘Along Came a Spider’. Une fois de plus, Jerry Goldsmith nous rappelle à quel point, après 40 ans de carrière exceptionnelle, il est un maître de la musique d’action complexe et sophistiquée à Hollywood...
La musique de Along Came a Spider est proposée cette fois-ci en version complète en "Deluxe collection" avec 64 et des pistes structurées dans l'ordre du film est organisée par Bruce Botnick, ami de longue date de Goldsmith, ingénieur du son et producteur de l'album.

In 'Along Came a Spider' we can enjoy some great new action tracks, especially 'The Ransom', illustrating the scene where Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman), the film's profiler detective, has to go into the underground to deliver the ransom to the killer. With percussion, frenetic strings, brass developing a pervasive theme throughout the scene, breathless tempo and constant rhythmic changes, 'The Ransom' clearly expresses the excitement and suspense of this dangerous ransom drop while maintaining a pervasive tension for over 7 minutes, an intense and absolutely essential piece of the 'Along Came a Spider' score. Once again, Jerry Goldsmith reminds us what a master of complex and sophisticated Hollywood action music he is, after a stellar 40-year career...
The music for Along Came a Spider is offered this time in a complete "Deluxe Collection" version with 64 and tracks structured in the order of the film is arranged by Goldsmith's longtime friend Bruce Botnick, the album's sound engineer and producer.
