READ MORE
One of Jerry Goldsmith’s most unusual horror projects comes to CD in complete form courtesy Varèse Sarabande’s Deluxe Edition. The Other (1972) used bucolic 1935 Connecticut to tell a truly disturbing story of twin boys with dangerous supernatural powers. Directed by Robert Mulligan (To a Kill Mockingbird) from a script and book by Tom Tryon, and costarring Uta Hagan and Diana Muldaur, the film has earned a cult reputation as a unique and affecting piece of 1970s horror.
Jerry Goldsmith tackled The Other amongst a string of oddball film and television projects during the changing tastes of the early ’70s. At the peak of his creative powers, he managed to combine the polar opposites of The Other’s tones into a perfect unity: beautiful music for the film’s nostalgic setting and childhood intimacy (with a gorgeous main theme), and dark strains for the unspeakable horrors of the story’s revelations.
